Flight Without Wings: Stories Behind the Story

More Flight

Horse shopping is my all time favorite thing to do. However, I fall into my teen character Suzie’s problem: every animal would work in my barn! In the story they go by air because…it’s more fun to have a hunky rich guy to fly you around, right? Except I’m not a pilot, but my son is. Yay, me.

Since he recently retired his Navy wings, he agreed to edit my flight scenes and schedule while he was in Charlotte for his pilot training at American Airlines. He’d flown a plane like Conor’s while he was in the Navy. However, the small plane he flew was a Toyota compared to Conor’s Rolls Royce! When he looked up Conor’s plane, he got the wants– until he saw the King Air price tag. Ah well, we can dream. Thus, the reason we like to immerse in a good story.

Story Titles

The title for my WIP originated from a quote I read when I was training and showing Arabian horses. Some hypothesize the following text describes the Arabian horse:

When God created the horse he said to the magnificent creature: I have made thee as no other. All the treasures of the earth lie between thy eyes. Thou shalt carry my friends upon thy back. Thy saddle shall be the seat of prayers to me. And thou shalt fly without wings, and conquer without any sword. —-The Koran

The Real Trainer

When my favorite Arabian trainer suddenly dropped out of the ring and returned a few years later, the gossip started and fired my imagination for this story. Her absence may have impacted her career, but it didn’t change her riding ability.

Although she motivated me to improve, I wasn’t born with her natural talent. Just for fun, here’s an old photo of me ready for the showring.
